trackback
I went to Dunkin Donuts on my way back from the pharmacy, and thought I asked for a chocolate glazed donut, but I must have had that verbal dyslexia Sameer always accuses me of having, and instead when I got home and had my tea ready and the laptop and remote controls all spread out, I found that I actually had a chocolate frosted donut - which I don’t like! Very upset now. There is no comparing the two. *sigh*
For the uninformed, America runs on Dunkin. (That’s their motto.) Here’s a picture of some Dunkin Donuts. The chocolate frosted are the ones othe top left. They are plain boring. I think I was spoiled by Decadent Donuts chocolate hazelnut topped donuts. Alas they have gone bank, I believe.
You can also see a slight variation of the frosted donut at the bottom of the picture. These are frosted donuts with hundreds and thousands sprinkled on top. Some people, like Sameer, like that for the extra crunch and flavour. It definitely beats the heck out of the regular frosted donuts which are very boring and not tasty at all. Hence I have forsaken the one I bought earlier.
Anyway, next to the chocolate frosted donut is a jelly filled donut. I haven’t tried this because it seems like a step down from regular glazed.
Center left is the “kreme” version, such as lemon kreme, bavarian kreme (ie custard) and chocolate kreme. The kreme donut has a creamy, flavoured center and is dusted in icing sugar. These are lovely to see, touch, and taste. Feeling the powder on your fingers as you eat the donut and seeing the lightly whipped cream ooze out of the center is part of what makes eating this donut so enjoyable. And they certainly don’t skimp on the cream. There’s always enough until the very end. The chocolate kreme is really good. It used to be favourite until I accidentally discovered glazed donuts.
Center right is the plain, glazed donut - a regular donut with an light glazing of icing sugar syrup. The one that I like is chocolate glazed - a chocolate flavoured donut with regular glazing. It tastes like chocolate cake. Hmmmm… It is undeniably the king of Dunkin Donuts’ crop.

I was just telling my dad the other day how I haven’t yet tasted any good cake or biscuits in this country. (Maybe I’m not trying hard enough and have to up my game.) But general coffee shop fare is not doing it for me and the bakery stuff doesn’t even look appetizing. Let’s not even mention supermarket cakes. Ugh… Even that lemon cupcake I got from Whole Foods the other day was terrible. So now Dunkin Donuts chocolate glazed donuts are my solace.
Oh, and if anyone wants to comment on my use of the word “jelly”, let me preempt you and just say “Yes, yes. I know. Americanisms” but I have no issues with the word because whatever passes for “jelly” around here has nothing on the jams in South Africa and the UK. Ohmigod I could almost die from the lack of tasty jams. The substandard marmalade I bought last week just made me even sadder. Tragic. Tragic!

I love jam (jelly) filled doughnuts! My mum makes the most incredible ones with jam in the centre and dusted with cinammon and sugar. Really soft and yummy.
They are called jam turnovers on the recipe and don’t have the hole in the centre. Best to have them hot when the jam is still liquid. Hmmm, there’s nuthin like apricot jam oozing from a hot doughnut.
I think I’ll msg her to have some ready for me when I get home next weekend
Follow up — I had a chocolate glazed donut at a Dunkin Donuts here in NY and it was not so wonderful goot.
Think I’ve actually now gone off the donut thing. Yes, I am that fickle!
Krispy Kreme donuts are the best. Shouldn’t have lowered yourself to Dunkin’ Donuts!
Oh, I had a Krispy Kreme but I didn’t like it. Too creamy.
